The exploitation of open pit coal in the department of Cesar is one of the most important economic activities, which involves the removal of large amounts of soil that generate changes in their physical, chemical and biological characteristics. The objective of the present investigation was to evaluate the relationship between edaphic and contaminant properties that allow the diagnosis of soils and edaphic materials affected by open-pit coal mining activities in the Department of Cesar through the application of multivariate statistical analyzes. Thirty-two (32) soil sampling sites of the first horizon (0-15cm) were selected, taking into account areas not disturbed by mining (natural soils) and altered by coal mining and physical, chemical and biological processes by the exhibition (loose materials excavation products, soil collections, rehabilitated areas and materials with presence of salts close to coal storage yards). The samples were characterized taking into account physical parameters (texture), chemicals (pH, EC, CEC, COS, N, P, SO4, Ca, Mg, Na, P, Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, Al) and biological ( ADN), this to know the status and influence of mining processes in the development or rehabilitation of soils. Later, the results of the characterization were analyzed with multivariate analysis techniques applying the principal components method (PCA) to identify relationships between the properties, the most influential variables in soil quality and the edaphic materials evaluated. In addition, the technique of hierarchical clustering (AAJ) was used to determine the potentialities and limitations of the study materials. ACP and AAJ were applied to two study scenarios (1. Study scenario excluding the variables silt and pH, 2. Study scenario excluding the variables, silt, Ca, Na and COS), the ACP for both scenarios showed that they manage to group the properties in 4 components that explain more than 68% of the total variance, in which the first component explains more than 32% of the variance and groups the variables related to limitations for edaphic potential (Al, Mn, Fe, Zn, Cu, K, Clay, Mg, CE and SO4) and are the ones that most identify materials with edaphic limitations located in the first group of dendograms generated by the AAJ application to these scenarios. The second component is explained by more than 16% of the total variance, and here are the chemical properties (CIC, DNA and N) of greater representativeness for the materials (soils with edaphic potential) agglomerated in group 2 of the dendograms generated by AAJ to the two scenarios, and those related to fertility and soil health.eng
